NDA vs RIMC — Which One to Choose After Class 8?
Every few months, a parent calls us or walks into our academy in Sikar with a very specific question.
Their child is in Class 6 or Class 7. The child has made it clear that a defence career is the goal. The parent has done some research and found two options. One is RIMC, the Rashtriya Indian Military College in Dehradun, which takes students directly at the Class 8 level. The other is the NDA route, which starts with serious focused preparation after Class 10 or Class 12.
The question is always some version of the same thing: which path is better for my child?
We have seen this dilemma play out hundreds of times. And what we can tell you from real experience is that there is no single correct answer. Both paths lead to the same destination, a commissioned officer’s uniform in the Indian Armed Forces. But the journey, the cost, the competition, and the type of child each path suits are very different.
So let us go through it properly.
What is RIMC? A Simple Overview
RIMC stands for Rashtriya Indian Military College. It is located in Garhi Cantonment, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The college was originally established on 13 March 1922 as the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College and has a history of more than 100 years.
Today, RIMC is a Category A establishment under the Ministry of Defence, at the same institutional level as the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. Its primary purpose, stated clearly, is to prepare young students academically, physically, and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy after they complete Class 12.
Admission to RIMC is only at the Class 8 level. This means a student who wants to join RIMC must appear for the entrance exam while they are in Class 7. The exam is conducted twice a year, once in June for the July session and once in December for the January session. Both boys and girls are eligible to apply.
The entrance exam tests students in three subjects: Mathematics, English, and General Knowledge. Each subject has minimum passing marks of 50 percent. After clearing the written exam, candidates go through a viva voce (interview), and then a medical examination at a designated military hospital.
Selected students live in the RIMC campus from Class 8 to Class 12, five years of residential life in a military environment. They study the CBSE curriculum alongside physical training, drills, sports, outdoor activities, and the kind of discipline that is closest to actual military life for a school-going student.
After completing Class 12 from RIMC, the strong expectation is that students will attempt the NDA exam and clear it. RIMC cadets have a significantly higher success rate in the NDA exam compared to regular school students, which is ultimately the whole point of the institution.
What is the NDA Route? A Simple Overview
NDA stands for National Defence Academy. It is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, and is the entry point for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force for candidates who enter at the 12th class level.
The NDA exam is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission. To appear for the NDA exam, you need to be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age and should be in Class 12 or should have passed Class 12. The exam has two papers totalling 900 marks: Mathematics and the General Ability Test. After clearing the written exam, candidates go through the SSB interview which is also 900 marks.
The NDA route does not require any special school or prior military institution. A student who studies in a regular school, whether in a village in Rajasthan, a town in UP, or a city in Punjab, can prepare for NDA and clear it if the preparation is right and consistent.
Many students who want to pursue the NDA route start their focused preparation either during Class 10 or after passing Class 12. Now Let Us Compare the Two Properly
Entry Point and Age
RIMC: You enter at Class 8. The child must be in Class 7 at the time of the exam and should be between 11.5 and 13 years of age at the time of admission. This is the key constraint. If your child is already in Class 8 or older, RIMC is no longer an option. The window closes early.
NDA Route: You can start preparing as early as Class 9 or Class 10. The actual NDA exam can be attempted once you are in Class 12 or have passed it. This gives a much larger window of opportunity. A student who is currently in Class 8, 9, or even 10 can still plan for NDA through the right preparation programme.
What the Selection Exam Looks Like
RIMC: Three papers covering Mathematics, English, and GK at the Class 7 level. The syllabus is school-level but the competition is intense. Students from across India apply for a very limited number of seats distributed state-wise. Getting into RIMC is genuinely hard.
NDA: The written exam is 900 marks, with Mathematics at Class 11 to 12 level and a comprehensive General Ability Test covering English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Current Affairs. This is followed by the 5-day SSB interview process which tests personality, leadership, and officer-like qualities across group tasks, psychological tests, and a personal interview.
Both are competitive. RIMC entry is harder to crack at the age of 12 or 13. NDA is a longer and more comprehensive selection process overall.
Cost of the Programme
This is something many parents do not fully account for when they start exploring RIMC.
RIMC annual fees for the academic year 2025 to 2026 are approximately Rs. 1,48,650 for General category candidates and Rs. 1,31,850 for SC and ST candidates. There is also a one-time refundable security deposit of Rs. 50,000. And this is only the base fee. Additional personal expenses, pocket money, and incidental charges add to the total.
Since RIMC is a 5-year programme from Class 8 to Class 12, the total cost over five years comes to somewhere between 7 to 8 lakh rupees for a General category family, not including travel and other expenses.
The NDA route through a quality coaching programme is typically more affordable. RIMC: Your child lives on the RIMC campus in Dehradun from the age of 12 or 13. Five years away from home. The child grows up in a military environment, which is excellent for discipline and character. But it is also five formative years largely away from family.

RIMC produces students who are extremely well-prepared for NDA. So Who Should Choose RIMC?
RIMC is a genuinely excellent institution. If your child is currently in Class 6 or early Class 7, is academically sharp, has shown natural discipline and a genuine love for a military lifestyle, and your family can afford the fee and is comfortable with the child living away from age 12 or 13, then RIMC is worth pursuing seriously.
RIMC gives the child five years of the closest thing to actual military life that is possible at the school level. The alumni network is strong. The name carries significant weight in Indian defence circles. And the structured environment removes a lot of the distractions that school-going teenagers face today.
But RIMC is a very specific fit. Not every child who wants to join the Indian Armed Forces needs to go through RIMC. And not every family needs to pursue RIMC just because they heard it is prestigious.
So Who Should Choose the NDA Route Directly?
The NDA route is for almost everyone else, which is the majority of students who dream of wearing a uniform.
If your child is in Class 8, 9, or 10 right now and the dream of NDA is clear, start the NDA foundation preparation. Join a structured programme after Class 10 that covers both the NDA written syllabus and SSB preparation. The window is wide and the competition, while real, is absolutely manageable with the right preparation.

But if the RIMC window has passed or the fees are not practical for your family right now, please do not feel like the NDA dream is any smaller or harder. It is not.
