Can I Join NDA With Spectacles or Poor Eyesight? Here Is What You Actually Need to Know
We get this question every single day.
Sometimes it comes from a student who just found out he needs glasses. Sometimes it is a parent calling us at 9 in the evening, worried sick because their child wears a minus 1.5 number and someone told them their NDA dream is over. And sometimes it is a student in Class 11 who has been preparing seriously for months and suddenly starts panicking because his classmate said spectacles are not allowed.
So let us sit down and talk about this properly. No confusing medical jargon, no half information, just straight facts from our years of coaching NDA aspirants at Alpha NDA Academy.
Here is the one line you need to read before anything else.
Wearing spectacles does not disqualify you from NDA. Your eye power number and your natural vision are what matter.
Now let us go deeper, because the details are what actually save or end your eligibility.
What Really Happens at the NDA Eye Test
Most students picture the eye test as just sitting down, reading a chart with glasses on, and leaving. That is not how it works.
At the NDA medical examination, which happens after your SSB interview, the doctors test your eyes WITHOUT your spectacles first. They want to see your unaided vision. Your naked eye. No glasses, no contact lenses. You stand 6 metres from the Snellen chart and read it as best you can. This unaided reading is the first and most important measurement.
After that, they test your corrected vision as well, meaning they check what you can see with your glasses on. Both readings go into your medical file.
Now here is something we always tell our students. A lot of rejection in eye tests happens because students had no idea what their unaided vision was. They only knew their spectacle number. These two things are different. Your power (like minus 1.5 or plus 0.75) tells the doctor how much correction your eye needs. Your unaided vision (like 6/9 or 6/18) tells them how clearly you can actually see without any help.
Both readings matter. Go to a proper eye doctor, not a school camp, and ask for both.
What is 6/6 and 6/9? Let Us Explain This in Plain Language
If you have never seen the inside of an eye clinic, these numbers can feel confusing. But they are actually simple.
When someone says your vision is 6/6, it means you can see from 6 metres away what a person with perfectly normal eyesight also sees at 6 metres. This is the gold standard. Normal, healthy vision.
6/9 means you have to be standing at 6 metres to see something that a person with normal eyes can see from 9 metres. Your vision is slightly weaker, but not dramatically so.
6/18 is weaker still. You see from 6 metres what a healthy eye sees from 18 metres.
6/60 is when someone has significantly poor vision without glasses.
For NDA Army entry, the minimum standard for your unaided vision is 6/6 in your better eye. Your worse eye can be 6/9 but not weaker than that.
Keep this in mind as you read the branch wise standards below.
NDA Eyesight Standards for Each Branch (2026)
This is the section where most students make mistakes. They look up “NDA eyesight standard” and find one number and assume it applies to everything. It does not. Each wing of the Armed Forces has its own standard. Army is different from Navy. Navy is different from Air Force.
Read your branch carefully.
Army Wing
Out of all three, Army has the most manageable eyesight requirements for most students.
Your unaided vision must be 6/6 in your better eye and 6/9 in your worse eye. This is the natural, glasses-off standard.
With glasses, your corrected vision should reach 6/6 in both eyes.
Now the power limits. Your myopia (minus number, nearsightedness) must not exceed minus 2.5 Dioptres. If you are at minus 2.3, you are within range. If you are at minus 2.8 or minus 3, you are outside the limit for Army entry under NDA.
Hypermetropia (plus number, farsightedness) must not exceed plus 2.5 Dioptres.
Astigmatism should stay within 0.75 Dioptres for the standard Category 1 entry.
Colour vision must be CP III or better. At this level you should be able to correctly identify red, green, and white colours from 1.5 metres. Colour blindness of any kind will disqualify you.
Squint, night blindness, or any progressive eye disease is also a disqualifying condition.
So to put it simply, if you wear glasses with a mild minus or plus power within these limits, and your unaided vision meets the 6/6 standard in your better eye, you very likely qualify for Army wing medically.
Navy Wing
Navy is stricter than Army, particularly on colour vision.
Your unaided vision here needs to be at least 6/12, but it must be correctable to 6/6.
The myopia limit is tighter here. Minus 1.75 Dioptres is the ceiling. So a student with minus 2 power who clears Army medicals might not clear Navy medicals. These small differences matter a lot.
For hypermetropia, up to plus 2.0 Dioptres is generally accepted.
Colour vision must meet CP I standard. This is a much higher bar than Army. The Ishihara plates test and the Martin Lantern Test are both used to check this. If you have any colour perception issues, Navy is going to be very difficult.
Binocular vision of Grade III is also required.
Squint and night blindness are disqualifying here as well.
Air Force Flying Branch
This is the strictest of all three wings, and we want to be fully honest with students who dream of flying.
The Air Force flying branch requires 6/6 unaided vision in BOTH eyes. Not just the better one. Both.
Spectacles are not permitted for the flying branch. The entire philosophy here is that a pilot cannot afford any dependence on corrective lenses during flying operations.
The myopia limit is around minus 0.5 Dioptres. Many guidelines say zero tolerance. Even a very mild minus power can be a problem.
Astigmatism must also be extremely low, generally within 0.5 Dioptres.
Colour vision must be CP I, tested with the Martin Lantern Test.
If you are dreaming of wearing wings on your chest, please get your eyes tested properly as early as Class 10. Not because we want to scare you, but because if there is a correction needed like LASIK, you need time. More on that in a bit.

Frequently Asked Questions on NDA Eyesight
These are questions real students ask us at Alpha NDA Academy, answered honestly.
Can I apply for NDA if I wear spectacles?
Yes, absolutely. You can apply. Spectacles are not mentioned anywhere on the NDA application form. The eye test happens much later, at the medical stage after written exam and SSB. So nothing stops you from applying.
What will be checked at the medical stage is your actual unaided vision and your spectacle power. If both fall within the allowed limits for your chosen branch, you will pass the eye test.
Before you apply, get a proper ophthalmologist report. Know your unaided vision numbers and your spectacle power. That way you go into the process with full clarity about where you stand.

My spectacle number is minus 1.5. Am I eligible?
For Army wing, yes. The limit is minus 2.5 and you are well within it.
For Navy wing, also yes. The limit there is minus 1.75 and minus 1.5 is within range.
For Air Force flying, this will likely be a problem. The limit there is around minus 0.5 and minus 1.5 exceeds it.
But remember, your power alone is not enough to determine eligibility. Your unaided vision must also meet the branch standard. So go get a proper test done. Do not rely on your old prescription from the optician near your home. Get a formal report from a certified eye specialist.
My number is minus 3 or higher. Is my NDA dream over?
Not entirely, but it does limit your options significantly for the NDA route.
Minus 3 exceeds the Army limit of minus 2.5 and the Navy limit of minus 1.75. For NDA entry into these wings, yes, it is a challenge.
But there are a few things worth knowing.
First, LASIK surgery, if done correctly and at least 12 months before your NDA medical examination, can be considered. We will explain LASIK more below.
Second, after graduation, the CDS (Combined Defence Services) entry for technical corps of the Army sometimes has more relaxed standards. Our CDS coaching team can guide you on this if NDA medicals become a concern.

I have colour blindness. Can I join NDA?
We will be completely straight with you on this one. Colour blindness is a disqualifying condition for all three wings of NDA. Army, Navy, and Air Force all require candidates to pass colour vision tests.
This is not something that changes with time or can be improved through training. The military uses colour coded maps, signals, and equipment at every level of operation. An officer who cannot identify colours reliably is a risk in the field.

Do I wear glasses during the NDA eye test or not?
You do not wear glasses during the first part of the eye test. Your unaided, naked eye vision is tested first. Only after that is your corrected vision (with glasses) also recorded.
Contact lenses are also not allowed during the examination. You cannot use any form of vision correction aid during the unaided test.
This is something that surprises many students. They assume the doctors will just put them in front of a chart with their glasses on and check if they can see. That is not how it works. The first question the medical board has is always: what can you see on your own?
Can I use contact lenses during the NDA medical eye test?
No. Contact lenses are specifically not permitted during the NDA eye test. Do not even bring them to the medical examination expecting to use them for any vision test. The doctors know to check for this.
I have a squint. Will I be rejected in NDA medical?
Squint, also called strabismus, is a condition where one or both eyes turn in a direction that is not aligned. This affects something called binocular vision, which is the ability of both eyes to work together and judge distances accurately.
For NDA, squint is generally a disqualifying condition because binocular vision and depth perception are essential for an officer. If you have had a squint corrected through surgery in the past, the medical board will still assess your current binocular vision carefully. The final decision lies with the military medical board.
We strongly advise getting a proper specialist opinion before the medical rather than finding out on the day itself.
What about night blindness?
Night blindness means difficulty seeing in low light conditions. For any military officer who might be deployed in operations at night, this is a serious concern.
Night blindness is a disqualifying condition for NDA. It will be tested during the medical examination.
Can I get LASIK done and then join NDA?
Yes, with conditions.
For Army and Navy wings, LASIK surgery can be considered provided it was done at least 12 months before the date of your NDA medical examination. Your vision must be completely stable after surgery, your retina must be healthy, and there should be no surgical complications. After LASIK, you still need to meet the standard vision requirements of the branch.
For Air Force flying branch, this is a complicated area and rules have changed over the years. Some earlier UPSC notifications did not permit LASIK for flying branch candidates at all. You should always check the most current official UPSC NDA notification and consult an eye specialist before going ahead with any surgery.
One important point. Radial Keratotomy, which is an older type of eye surgery, is specifically NOT accepted. Only LASIK and PRK (Excimer) laser procedures within the permitted limits are considered.
Never rush into eye surgery just for NDA without proper professional medical advice. The decision has to be guided by a qualified eye doctor who knows your specific eye condition.
Can girls with spectacles join NDA?
Yes. The same eyesight standards apply to female candidates as to male candidates for all three wings of NDA. There is no separate or relaxed standard for girls on the eyesight front.

My unaided vision is 6/9 in both eyes. Does that disqualify me for Army?
This is a tricky situation. Army requires 6/6 in the BETTER eye and 6/9 in the worse eye. If both your eyes are at 6/9 unaided, then your better eye is not meeting the 6/6 standard.
But here is something important. Vision readings can vary slightly depending on lighting, the specific chart used, your tiredness, and the professional doing the test. Do not rely on a single reading from a school eye camp or a rough optician test. Get a formal report from a certified ophthalmologist using proper clinical equipment. That report is what tells you the real picture.
My spectacles are new and the number is still changing. What do I do?
This is actually one of the most common situations we see among Class 10 and 11 students. Their prescription is still changing because the eyes are still developing.
Our honest advice is this. Start taking care of your eyes right now, not later. Reduce screen time. Study under proper white light. Take breaks every 30 to 40 minutes and look at something far away for 20 seconds. Sleep well. Eat right. Go outside in natural light daily. These are not tips we just read somewhere. These are habits we enforce in our residential campus at Alpha NDA Academy because we know they genuinely help.
Many students who join us with a mild minus power find that with proper daily discipline and reduced strain, their power progression either stops or slows down significantly. Start early.
When Borderline Cases Reach the Medical Board
Over the years at Alpha NDA Academy we have seen some interesting outcomes at the medical stage. Students with minus 2.3 power who were nervous about the Army medical went through fine. Students with 6/9 unaided in both eyes were referred to a special ophthalmology board made up of three senior eye specialists, and some of them got cleared after a detailed review.
The medical board in the Indian Armed Forces is thorough and fair. Borderline cases are not simply rejected at the door. They are reviewed carefully. But none of this should give you false confidence. Know your numbers, keep your eyes healthy, and do not walk into the medical blind about your own condition.
The single best thing you can do right now is go to a certified ophthalmologist, get a full eye report with both unaided and corrected vision numbers and your spectacle power in Dioptres, and then decide your path clearly.
Eye Conditions That Will Disqualify You from NDA
So we have talked a lot about spectacles and power limits. But there are some conditions that go beyond power, and these will result in rejection regardless of branch.
Colour blindness of any type and any severity is a disqualifying condition for all three wings.
Night blindness or any difficulty with vision in low light conditions is disqualifying.
Squint, where one eye turns inward or outward and affects binocular vision, is generally disqualifying.
Progressive eye diseases like glaucoma or any macular condition that is likely to worsen over time will also lead to rejection.
Radial Keratotomy surgery, which is a specific older eye surgery method, is not accepted by the Armed Forces.
How to Protect Your Eyes During NDA Preparation
We want to be honest here. A lot of students who come to us with spectacle issues developed them or worsened them during Class 10 and 11 because of screen overuse and poor study habits. Late night mobile use, studying in dim light, zero outdoor time. These things add up.
At Alpha NDA Academy, the daily routine for every student includes physical training and outdoor time every morning. This is not just for physical fitness. Getting outside in natural light every morning is genuinely good for eye health and we have seen it make a difference.
Practical things you can do starting today:
Study in bright, preferably natural light. Not in a dark room with just your phone screen.
Every 20 to 30 minutes of close reading, look out of a window or at something at least 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This habit reduces strain on the focusing muscles of the eye.
Keep mobile phone use in the evening to a minimum. Blue light at night disrupts both sleep and eye health.
Eat carrots, amla, spinach, eggs, and milk regularly. Vitamin A from these foods genuinely supports eye health.
Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Eye muscles recover while you sleep.
Get your eyes checked once a year by a proper specialist, not just a rough chart reading at a camp.
