First, Where Is NDA and What Is It?
The National Defence Academy is located at Khadakwasla near Pune in Maharashtra. The campus sits on more than 7,000 acres of land near the beautiful Khadakwasla Lake with the historic Sinhagad Fort visible in the background. The location is breathtaking and the campus is one of the largest military training campuses in Asia.
NDA holds a very special place in the history of military education. It is the first tri-service academy in the world, which means Army, Navy, and Air Force cadets all train together under the same roof. No other country in the world was doing this when India started it. That is something every NDA cadet should feel proud about.
NDA was formally commissioned on 7 December 1954. Since then, it has produced three Param Vir Chakra recipients, thirteen Ashoka Chakra recipients, and more than thirty Chiefs of Staff of the Indian Armed Forces. When you join NDA, you walk into a history that is over sixty years old.
Academically, NDA is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. So when a cadet completes the three year program, they graduate with a B.Sc or B.A. degree from JNU along with their commission into the armed forces. This means you do not lose your academic future when you join the defence. You earn a real university degree alongside one of the most respected military trainings in the world.
How NDA Training Is Structured: 3 Years and 6 Terms
The entire NDA training is spread over 3 years which are divided into 6 terms. Each term lasts around six months. Two new courses join NDA every year, one in January and one in July. So when you arrive at NDA, you are referred to by your course number, for example the 147th Course or the 148th Course.
Each year at NDA has a specific focus. The junior terms are about building your foundation. The middle terms push you harder. The senior terms are where you step into leadership.

Year 1 at NDA: Building the Foundation From Zero
What Happens in the First Few Days: PT Zero
Before regular training even begins, every new cadet goes through a phase called PT Zero. This is an intensive physical conditioning period. The purpose is simple. You have come from a civilian life, where your habits, your sleep schedule, your fitness levels, and your mindset are all your own. PT Zero breaks all of that and starts rebuilding you from the ground up.
It is not comfortable. But it is necessary. And every cadet who has gone through it will tell you that PT Zero is what makes the rest of training possible. You come out of it fitter, sharper, and ready to follow the NDA routine.
The Squadron System
On your first day at NDA, you are assigned to one of 18 Squadrons. Your squadron is your family for the next three years. Inter-squadron competitions in sports, academics, drill, and overall performance are fiercely competitive. The Best Squadron Trophy is the most prized award in the entire academy. Winning it as part of your squadron is a feeling that cadets carry for the rest of their careers.
Academic Training in Year 1
In the first year, academics focus on building a strong base. Cadets from the Science stream study Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Science. Cadets from the Humanities stream study History, Political Science, Economics, and Geography. The academic training is designed with an Armed Forces orientation, which means subjects are taught with military relevance wherever possible.

Physical Training in Year 1
Physical training at NDA is non-negotiable. Every single day starts early and PT is a fixed part of the schedule. Cadets do running, obstacle courses, drill, yoga, and sports.
Swimming is compulsory for every cadet, regardless of their wing. If you cannot swim when you arrive, NDA will teach you. But making sure you can swim before you join is always a good idea.
For Army cadets, horse riding called Equitation is also compulsory. Yes, this is real. Future Army officers at NDA learn to ride horses as part of their training. It builds balance, discipline, and confidence in a way that very few other activities can.
Year 2 at NDA: The Terms That Test You the Most

The subjects go deeper in the middle terms. For Science cadets, topics from Class 12 and beyond start appearing. For Humanities cadets, analytical and essay-based work increases. Service Training Begins
In the middle terms, service-specific training starts becoming more visible. Naval cadets begin their specialised nautical training which includes Navigation, Seamanship, and Communication. Visits to service establishments are also part of training. Naval cadets visit Mumbai to observe ships, submarines, and naval facilities. Air Force cadets get exposure to airfields and technical equipment. These visits give cadets a real feel for what their service life will look like after NDA.
Adventure Training at NDA
One of the most exciting parts of life at NDA is adventure training, and Year 2 is when a lot of this comes alive. Here is something most people outside NDA do not know.
Every NDA cadet learns to fly a glider.
Yes, this is true. Gliding is part of the NDA curriculum. Every cadet, regardless of whether they are Army, Navy, or Air Force, gets the experience of being in the air through gliding. It builds confidence in a way that ground training simply cannot.
Other adventure activities at NDA include rock climbing, trekking, obstacle training, and water sports. NDA has its own watermanship training centre at Peacock Bay near the Khadakwasla Lake. Cadets learn sailing, boating, and water navigation as part of this training.
Year 3 at NDA: The Senior Term and Leadership
Year 3 is the most awaited part of every cadet’s NDA journey. This is when you become a senior cadet. The juniors who just joined are now where you were two years ago, and you have become the person responsible for guiding them.
Leadership Roles and Responsibilities
NDA has a very strict hierarchy based on terms. Senior cadets hold positions of real responsibility. The highest positions are the Under Officer and the Senior Under Officer. These are not just titles. They come with actual duties, authority over junior cadets, and accountability for squadron performance.
Rotating through leadership positions during training exercises is how NDA builds officer-like thinking from a very early age. You are not just told what leadership means. You are made to practice it every single day, with real consequences if things go wrong.
Physical Training Peaks in the Senior Terms
By Year 3, your fitness level has grown significantly compared to when you first arrived. The physical training demands are at their peak in the senior terms. Performance tests are more rigorous. The Final Evaluation and Passing Out Parade
The three years at NDA end with the most celebrated moment of the entire journey: the Passing Out Parade.
The Passing Out Parade at NDA is one of the most impressive military parades in India. Thousands of family members, officers, and dignitaries attend. The cadets who march on that parade ground have spent three years transforming themselves from school students into future officers.

Daily Routine at NDA: What a Typical Day Looks Like
Life at NDA is structured down to every hour. There are no gaps in the day that are left to chance. Here is a general picture of what a typical NDA day looks like:
5:00 AM or earlier Wake up, PT begins
Morning Physical Training, drill, and games period
Late Morning Academic classes begin
Afternoon More academic periods or service training
Evening Sports, extracurricular activities, and hobby clubs
Night Study time, lights out at a fixed time

What Happens After NDA: The Three Paths
After three years at NDA, cadets do not get commissioned directly. They go to their respective service academies for further pre-commission training. This is where Army, Navy, and Air Force cadets separate.
Army Cadets go to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun for about one year of further training before commissioning as Lieutenant.
Naval Cadets go to the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala in Kerala for further training before commissioning as Sub Lieutenant.
Air Force Cadets go to the Air Force Academy (AFA) at Dundigal near Hyderabad for one year of flying and technical training before commissioning as Flying Officer.
So the total journey from NDA to commission is around four years for most cadets. Three years at NDA plus one year at the respective service academy.
