What NDA Actually Requires from You
The NDA exam is conducted by UPSC twice a year. For NDA I 2025, a total of 406 vacancies were announced. The competition is fierce because roughly 4 to 5 lakh students appear each time. Only a fraction clear the written exam. Out of those, only about 1 in 6 candidates gets recommended at SSB.
The written exam is 900 marks. Mathematics is 300 marks, covering Class 11 and 12 level topics like algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, and statistics. The General Ability Test is 600 marks and covers English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Current Affairs. You get 2.5 hours for each paper.
After clearing the written exam, the SSB interview begins. This is a 5-day residential process at one of the Services Selection Boards in India. Allahabad, Bhopal, Bangalore, and Dehradun are the main boards. The SSB evaluates 15 Officer Like Qualities through Group Discussions, Psychological Tests, Group Tasks, Outdoor Activities on the GTO ground, and a Personal Interview.
The eligibility requirement is that you must be between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age and must be in Class 12 or have passed it. There is no restriction on stream for the Army Wing. For the Air Force and Navy Wings, Physics and Mathematics in Class 12 are required.
Girls from West Bengal can also apply for NDA following the Supreme Court’s historic order in August 2021. The eligibility criteria are the same as for boys.
