We have been training NDA aspirants for years at our campus in Sikar, Rajasthan. We have seen students from Class 10 come in with zero idea about NDA and go on to crack the written exam and SSB in their very first attempt. We have also seen students walk in after Class 12 with only 4 months left before the exam, panicking because they had barely touched the syllabus.
The difference between these two types of students is not intelligence. It is not even hard work. It is simply the time they gave themselves to prepare.
This guide is our honest answer to every question parents and students ask us about when and how to start NDA coaching. Read it carefully. It might just be the most useful thing you read before making this decision.
Let Us First Understand What NDA Actually Is
A lot of students confuse NDA with other defence exams. So before we talk about timing, let us be clear on what you are actually preparing for.
NDA stands for National Defence Academy. UPSC conducts this exam twice every year, once around April and once around September. The written exam has two papers. Mathematics carries 300 marks and has 120 questions. The General Ability Test carries 600 marks and has 150 questions. Total is 900 marks. Both papers have negative marking, which means guessing blindly will cost you marks.
After clearing the written exam, selected candidates appear for the SSB interview. SSB is a 5 day process at one of the Service Selection Boards across India. It tests your personality, leadership qualities, communication, and overall fitness to become an officer.
To apply for NDA, a student must be either appearing in Class 12 or must have already passed Class 12. The age must be between 16 and a half years and 19 and a half years at the time of the exam.
So technically, you cannot sit for NDA in Class 10. But what you do in Class 10 decides everything about how ready you will be when you finally appear.
Frequently Asked Questions About Starting NDA Coaching
Can I really start NDA coaching while still in Class 10?
Yes, and this is actually our strongest recommendation.
Think about it this way. If you start after Class 10, you get roughly 2 to 3 years before your first NDA attempt. That is 2 to 3 years to build your Mathematics foundation, develop English reading habits, work on physical fitness, and slowly develop the kind of personality SSB looks for. None of these things happen in a month or two.
The NDA Mathematics paper covers topics like Calculus, Matrices, Vectors, Probability, and Coordinate Geometry. These topics come in Class 11 and 12 syllabus. When you start NDA coaching after Class 10, you study these topics from the beginning with NDA in mind. So your school studies and NDA preparation do not fight with each other. They support each other.

In this batch, students complete their Class 11 and 12 academics alongside full NDA preparation under one integrated programme. What if I am already in Class 11? Have I missed the right time?
No. Not at all. Class 11 is still a very good time to start.
We will be honest. The students who join in Class 10 do have a slightly longer runway. But Class 11 is far from too late. You still have around 1.5 to 2 years before your first serious NDA attempt.
What matters in Class 11 is that you start immediately and do not waste the first few months thinking about it. The moment you decide you want NDA, get into a proper structured programme. Do not wait for board exams to finish. Do not wait for the next academic session. Start now.

I have already completed Class 12. Is it too late for me?
No. But we need to be straight with you here.
If you have just passed Class 12, your time window is shorter now. Depending on your date of birth, you may have 2 to 4 more attempts left within the age limit. That is still enough to crack NDA if you prepare seriously and with the right coaching.
What you should absolutely not do is waste time on self study alone, thinking you will figure it out by yourself. The NDA syllabus is large. Negative marking is tricky. And SSB is something you genuinely cannot prepare for without proper guided training.

Why does starting from Class 10 make such a big difference?
We hear this question a lot. Parents especially want to understand the logic before committing.
The NDA is not just a written exam. It is a two stage selection process. The written exam tests your academic knowledge and problem solving ability. The SSB tests your personality, leadership, communication, and mental makeup. Both require different kinds of preparation and both take time to build.
When a student starts in Class 10, they have time to build Mathematics slowly, chapter by chapter, without pressure. They have time to develop English reading habits by actually reading daily, not cramming vocabulary lists three months before the exam. They have time to build physical fitness gradually. And most importantly, they have time to attend SSB training sessions consistently over months, which is the only real way to develop the officer like qualities that SSB assessors are trained to spot.
When someone starts in Class 12 or after, all of this has to be compressed. Math, English, GK, physical fitness, SSB personality, all in a few months. It is doable for some students. But it is genuinely stressful and the chance of gaps in preparation is much higher.

What subjects should I focus on if I am starting in Class 10?
This is a practical question and we appreciate it.
Start with Mathematics. It is the single most scoring and most feared subject in NDA. If your Class 9 and 10 Maths base is solid, Class 11 and 12 topics will make much more sense. Focus on Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry in Class 10. These form the base for almost everything that comes later in NDA Maths.
Work on English every single day. Not grammar exercises only. Read. Read newspapers. Read books. Read anything in English that interests you. The General Ability Test has a strong English section and no amount of last minute preparation can replace the habit of reading built over months.
Stay aware of current affairs. What is happening in India, in defence, in the world. NDA’s GK section is not impossibly difficult but it rewards students who are genuinely curious about the world around them.
Start taking your physical fitness seriously. Go for a run in the morning. Do basic exercises. Build stamina. This will matter when SSB comes.
Is NDA coaching very different from regular school tuition?
Very different. And this is something many students and parents do not realise until they get into the exam.
Regular school coaching or tuition is built around board exam marks. The goal is to cover the syllabus and score well in the board paper. NDA coaching is built around a completely different goal. UPSC sets the NDA paper and it has its own pattern, its own difficulty level, and its own traps.
For example, in NDA Mathematics, 120 questions in 150 minutes means roughly 75 seconds per question. If you are not trained to solve quickly and manage time under pressure, you will struggle even if you know the concepts. School tuition does not train this.
Similarly, NDA GAT has questions from Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, English, and Current Affairs all in one paper. Managing this mix, knowing what to attempt and what to skip, and handling negative marking requires specific exam strategy that only NDA focused coaching teaches.

Should I join a residential NDA coaching programme or study from home?
For most students, residential coaching gives far better results. And we say this not to promote ourselves but because we have watched both groups of students closely for years.
At home, even the most motivated students struggle with distractions. There is no structured daily routine. Nobody is checking whether you studied Math today or skipped it. Nobody is ensuring you ran 2 kilometres in the morning. Nobody is training you for SSB.
In a residential NDA academy, every hour of the day is structured. You wake up, follow a disciplined schedule, attend academic classes, participate in physical training, attend SSB sessions, clear doubts, write tests, sleep, and repeat. The peer environment alone is worth a lot. When everyone around you is working hard towards the same goal, it becomes natural to match that energy.

My parents feel Class 10 is too young to leave home. How do I convince them?
We understand this concern deeply. Many parents feel the same way at first.
Here is the simplest way to think about it. The NDA age limit is 16 and a half to 19 and a half years. This is a small window. Every year that passes without preparation is one less year of attempts. If a student waits until after Class 12 to start, they might have only one or two attempts left in their age window. If they had started in Class 10, they would have had the same exam in front of them but with two full years of preparation behind them.
The students at our academy are not just studying. They are living in a disciplined, safe, structured environment that genuinely builds character. Many parents who were hesitant at the start tell us later that those 2 years transformed their child in ways they did not expect. Confidence, communication, physical fitness, time management, all of these develop naturally in a military style residential environment.
Does it matter which stream I am in at school?
Partly yes, and partly no.
If you want to join the Indian Army through NDA, students from Science, Commerce, and Arts all can apply. Stream does not matter.
If you want to join the Air Force or Navy through NDA, you need Physics and Mathematics as subjects in Class 12. So for Air Force and Navy, Science stream is necessary.
At Alpha NDA Academy, we guide students from all streams. Non science students who target Army are fully supported. But if a student in Class 10 is clear that they want Air Force or Navy, we strongly advise choosing Science with Physics and Mathematics in Class 11 and 12.
How many times can I appear for NDA?
There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts. You can appear as many times as you want as long as you are within the age limit of 16 and a half to 19 and a half years.
Practically speaking, most students get 3 to 5 attempts within this age window depending on when they appear for the first time. Students who start in Class 10 often get their first attempt while still in Class 12, which means they maximise the total number of chances available to them.

Is there any minimum percentage required to apply for NDA?
No. There is no minimum percentage required to apply for the NDA exam.
As per the official UPSC NDA notification, candidates only need to have passed or be appearing in Class 12 from any recognised board. Whether that is CBSE, ICSE, or a state board does not matter. And the percentage you scored in boards does not matter either.
What matters is the NDA written exam score, your performance in the SSB, and your medical fitness. That is it.
What happens after you crack the NDA written exam?
After clearing the written exam, you are called for the SSB interview at one of the Service Selection Boards. The SSB is a 5 day process and this is where many students get stuck because they were not prepared for it.
Day 1 is screening. Candidates appear for intelligence and picture perception tests. Those who clear screening stay on for the remaining days.
Days 2 to 4 involve psychological testing, group tasks, outdoor GTO activities, and individual interviews with assessors.
Day 5 is the conference day where the board makes its final recommendation.
What SSB is really testing is whether you have the qualities needed to be an officer. These qualities include leadership, communication, teamwork, mental alertness, and confidence. These qualities are not something you develop by reading a book one week before SSB. They develop over months of consistent practice.
