Can I Crack NDA With 60% in 12th Science?
Let us be honest with you from the very first line.
We get this question almost every week. A student messages us, or a parent calls, and somewhere in the conversation they say it. “Sir, boards mein 60% aaye hain. Kya NDA ho sakta hai?”
And what bothers us is not the question. The question is absolutely fair. What bothers us is that so many students are walking around with this fear in their head, thinking their 12th marks have ended something before it even started.
So let us just answer everything here. No vague answers, no “it depends.” Real information, the kind you can check yourself on the UPSC website.
Q1. Does UPSC even ask for a minimum percentage in 12th for NDA?
No. UPSC does not.
Go check the official NDA notification on upsc.gov.in right now. You will not find any mention of 50%, 60%, 70%, or any percentage. The only academic requirement in the entire notification is that the candidate must have passed Class 12 from a recognised board, or must be currently appearing in it.
That is it. Passed or appearing. That is the full academic requirement.
We have said this so many times to so many families and the relief on their faces is always the same. All that worry, all those weeks of second-guessing, and it turns out the rule was never there in the first place.
Q2. Then where did this “60% required for NDA” idea even come from?
Honestly, it spreads the same way most wrong information does in India. Someone wrote it somewhere without checking the actual notification. Someone else copied it. Then more people shared it. And now half the students in the country believe something that UPSC never said.
Some confusion also happens because certain military schools, Sainik Schools, and Rashtriya Military Schools have their own academic requirements for admission. Those are completely separate institutions. NDA the exam, which UPSC conducts, has no such requirement.
We always tell students: when in doubt, go to the source. Read the actual UPSC NDA notification. Do not trust what a random website or a relative’s friend said.
Q3. So what actually decides NDA selection?
Three stages. And none of them involve your 12th marksheet.
The first stage is the UPSC written exam. It has two papers on the same day. Mathematics carries 300 marks and the General Ability Test carries 600 marks. Total is 900 marks. To qualify, you need at least 25% in each paper separately, meaning at least 75 in Maths and at least 150 in GAT. You also need to cross the overall aggregate cutoff which varies each year.
To give you real numbers from official UPSC records: the NDA 1 2025 written cutoff was 334 out of 900. The NDA 2 2024 written cutoff was 305 out of 900. The final selection cutoff for NDA 1 2025 (written plus SSB combined out of 1800) was 699.
The second stage is the SSB interview, which is a five-day personality and intelligence assessment. It carries 900 marks. No one at SSB will ask you what percentage you scored in 12th.
The third stage is the medical examination. Again, your board marks do not appear anywhere here.
Your 12th percentage is simply not part of this process. Not even a little bit.
Q4. I have Physics and Maths in my 12th Science. Does that help?
Yes, and this is important to know.
For the Indian Army wing of NDA, candidates from any stream can apply. Science, Commerce, Arts, all are eligible.
But for the Air Force and Navy wings, you must have studied Physics and Mathematics in Class 12. Not a percentage requirement. A subject requirement.
Since you are asking about 12th Science, you almost certainly have Physics and Maths. That means you are eligible for all three wings. Army, Navy, and Air Force. A student with 60% in Science with PCM can apply for Air Force. A student with 85% in Commerce cannot. Your stream matters more than your marks here.
Q5. My boards were not great. Will that affect my NDA preparation?
Now this is the more honest version of the question, and it deserves a straight answer.
Your board percentage might reflect some gaps in your subject understanding. That is real. A student who scored 60% in Maths in boards might have weak areas in certain chapters, and those same chapters appear in the NDA written exam. This is not a reason to panic. It is just something to fix.

What we have noticed over the years is that 12th percentage is a very poor predictor of NDA written exam performance. Some students with 75% in boards plateau early in preparation. The board exam and the NDA exam test different things, in different ways. Do not assume one tells you how you will do in the other.
Q6. Give me an honest picture. Can a 60% student actually clear NDA written?
Yes. Without any conditions attached to that yes.
The NDA Maths paper covers topics that are taught in Class 11 and 12. Algebra, Trigonometry, Matrices and Determinants, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Statistics, and Probability. These are learnable topics. With the right teacher and consistent daily practice, any student can build these up.
The GAT paper covers English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, and Current Affairs. Again, all standard Class 11 and 12 level content. Nothing exotic or impossible.
Many students who end up clearing NDA written are not toppers. They are students who showed up every day, solved their daily practice papers, revised their notes regularly, and took the weekly mock tests seriously. That is the pattern we see in students who qualify.
Q7. What about the SSB interview? Will a 60% student struggle there?
SSB does not care about your Class 12 percentage.
SSB assesses you on 15 qualities called Officer Like Qualities. These include things like how effectively you communicate, how you handle group tasks, whether you show initiative, how you behave under pressure, whether you are physically and mentally fit. None of these are graded on your board marks.
We have had students from rural backgrounds, students who appeared for exams in Hindi medium, students with 55% in boards, and they have performed exceptionally at SSB because they built the right personality and confidence over months of preparation.
SSB looks for a certain kind of person. Not a certain kind of certificate.

Q8. What if I am still in Class 12 and scared my boards will come low?
Then here is the most useful thing we can tell you.
Do not study Class 12 and NDA as two separate things fighting for your time. They overlap significantly, especially in Maths and Physics. A student who genuinely understands Trigonometry will score well in both their boards and in NDA Maths. A student who only memorises formulas for boards will struggle in NDA.
Focus on understanding over marks, and both will benefit.

Q10. What should I do right now, today, if I want to start preparing for NDA?
A few things that actually move the needle.
Start solving previous year NDA papers. Just open them. See where you stand. This gives you a real picture faster than any mock test app or random quiz.
Get your NCERT books for Class 11 and 12 in order. Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English, History, Geography. These form the core of NDA preparation.
Start reading a newspaper daily. Even fifteen to twenty minutes of reading and noting down important events, defence news, and national affairs will build your GAT score significantly over months.
Find out when the next NDA exam is and work backward from that date. NDA 1 is usually in April and NDA 2 is in September. If the next attempt is four months away, plan those four months seriously.

The Bottom Line
60% in 12th Science is not a barrier to NDA. UPSC never made it one.
What matters is whether you are between 16.5 and 19.5 years of age, whether you have passed or are appearing in Class 12, and whether you are unmarried. That is the eligibility. You either meet it or you do not. A percentage does not enter this calculation.
After eligibility, what matters is how you prepare for the written exam and SSB. And that is entirely in your hands.
