Total Cost of NDA Preparation: A Realistic Budget Breakdown
Whenever a student or parent sits with us for the first time, the conversation almost always goes the same way. They ask about the exam, they ask about eligibility, and then they ask the third question.
“Sir, what will be the total cost?”
That question is completely fair. It is important. And honestly, it does not get answered clearly enough anywhere. Most articles give vague ranges and leave families more confused than before they started reading.
So we are going to give you real numbers here. Based on what we have seen working with students across Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and UP, we know where the money goes, where it gets wasted, and where spending a little more actually saves a lot later.
This is that honest breakdown.
Before the Numbers: Why This Investment Makes Sense
A commissioned officer in the Indian Armed Forces starts at Level 10 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. That is Rs. 56,100 per month as basic pay. Add Military Service Pay, Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, and other allowances, and the total in-hand package for a newly commissioned officer typically comes to Rs. 80,000 to over Rs. 1,00,000 per month.
This means if your family invests Rs. 2 lakh in NDA preparation, the entire amount is recovered within the first two to three months of service. Beyond that, there is a complete career with government housing, medical benefits, pension, and respect that very few other careers in India can match.
So when we talk about the cost of NDA preparation, we are not talking about an expense. We are talking about a one-time investment with returns that last thirty years.
Now let us get to the actual numbers.
The Complete Budget Breakdown of NDA Preparation
We have split the total cost into six parts so you can plan each one clearly.
1. UPSC NDA Application Fee
This is the smallest number in the entire budget, but students and parents often forget to even look it up.
The UPSC NDA application fee is Rs. 100 for General and OBC male candidates. Female candidates, SC and ST candidates, and wards of JCOs and NCOs are completely exempt and pay nothing.
NDA is conducted twice a year. NDA 1 is in April and NDA 2 is in September. If a student attempts both in the same year, the maximum application fee paid is just Rs. 200. That is genuinely one of the lowest exam fees in Indian competitive examination history.
The form is filled entirely online at upsc.gov.in. No offline submission or cash payment option exists at the exam center.

2. NDA Coaching Fees
This is where most of the budget goes, and this is where the biggest difference in quality and price exists.
Coaching in India broadly falls into three types and each type has a very different price point.
Online NDA Coaching
The most affordable option available. A full NDA preparation course online typically costs between Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 50,000. This works for students who are genuinely self-disciplined and can manage a consistent schedule on their own at home.
But here is the truth from our experience. When students come to us after trying online coaching first, nine times out of ten they say the same thing. They could not stay consistent. Distractions at home, no one pushing them, no accountability. Online coaching works beautifully for some students and does not work at all for others. You know yourself best.
Offline Day Scholar Coaching
This means attending a coaching center daily but going home in the evenings. Fees typically range between Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 1,20,000 per year. This option makes sense if you live in the same city as a good NDA-specific coaching center.
The critical word there is NDA-specific. We have seen students join general competitive exam coaching centers that offer NDA as one of their many programs. These centers rarely have the depth needed. Six months later the student has to restart at a proper NDA academy. That is money and time both lost.
Residential Coaching with Hostel
For students coming from different cities, and honestly even for students from the same city who want a distraction-free environment, residential coaching is the most effective option.
A full residential NDA program covering coaching, hostel accommodation, meals, physical training, and SSB preparation typically costs between Rs. 1,20,000 and Rs. 3,50,000 per year. The range is wide because it depends on the city, the institute, and what is actually included in the fee.

Total cost across two years for a residential program typically ranges from Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 6.5 lakh.

3. Books and Study Material
Here is something we always tell parents: you do not need to spend a lot on books.
NCERT textbooks from Class 10 to Class 12, especially Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English, cover most of the NDA tests. These are either free on the NCERT website or available in print at very reasonable rates.
Beyond NCERTs, RS Aggarwal covers NDA Mathematics well. Lucent General Knowledge is the go-to for current affairs and general knowledge preparation. Wren and Martin handles English grammar. Together these cost somewhere between Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 2,500 depending on whether you buy new or second-hand copies.

Students do not need to buy separate material. The mistake students make is buying 8 to 10 different books out of anxiety, overlapping the content, and confusing themselves.

4. Stationery and Notebooks
Small cost but it adds up over a year.
When preparation begins, there is an initial setup phase of building notes across all subjects. That first month or two can cost Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,500 for notebooks, pens, a geometry set, highlighters, and similar supplies. After that the monthly stationery spend drops considerably to around Rs. 200 to Rs. 500.
Over a full year the stationery budget usually settles between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 8,000.

5. Physical Fitness
This is the budget item that almost every “cost of NDA preparation” article forgets to mention. And it genuinely matters.
NDA is not purely an academic examination. The medical examination at AFMSF and the SSB stage both have physical standards. Reaching those standards takes months of regular training, not two weeks of jogging before the SSB.

If you are preparing through day scholar coaching or from home, you need to account for this separately. A decent pair of running shoes costs Rs. 800 to Rs. 2,500. Gym membership in a tier-2 or tier-3 city runs between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,500 per month. Nutrition for an active student preparing for defence is important but does not require expensive supplements, just proper home cooked meals with adequate protein.
Estimated cost: Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000 per year if not in residential program. Zero if hostel-based training is included.
6. SSB Interview Stage Expenses
This is the final leg and it is the one most families plan for least.
After clearing the NDA written examination (which qualifies roughly 6,000 students out of the 4 to 5 lakh who appear each cycle), candidates are called for the SSB interview. This is a five-day selection process held at different Services Selection Board centers across India, including Allahabad, Bhopal, and Bangalore.
Travelling from your city to the SSB center is your responsibility. Depending on distance, rail travel in sleeper class typically costs Rs. 500 to Rs. 3,000. Once you arrive at the SSB center, accommodation and meals are provided by the Selection Board, so that is not an expense. But travel, small personal items, and incidentals across the five-day process add up to around Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 5,000 per attempt.
What many students do not plan for is separate SSB coaching after clearing the written exam. Some coaching institutes only teach the written syllabus and expect students to figure out SSB on their own. Last-minute SSB coaching programs cost anywhere from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 50,000 for a short residential course.

For a student joining after Class 12 (1-year residential program):
UPSC application fee for two attempts comes to about Rs. 200. Residential coaching with hostel and meals is Rs. 1,20,000 to Rs. 3,50,000. Books and material add Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000. Stationery is Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 8,000. Physical fitness is included in the residential fee so zero extra. SSB travel and personal expenses are Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 5,000.
Total for one year of serious residential NDA preparation comes to roughly Rs. 1.25 lakh to Rs. 3.68 lakh.
For a student starting after Class 10 (2-year residential foundation program):
The two-year residential foundation program itself is Rs. 2.5 lakh to Rs. 6.5 lakh. Books and material for two years add Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 8,000. Stationery for two years is Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 15,000. Application fee adds Rs. 200 to Rs. 400. SSB expenses add Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 5,000.
Total across two years is approximately Rs. 2.6 lakh to Rs. 6.78 lakh.
Where Money Actually Gets Wasted
We see these patterns repeat with students who come to us after spending elsewhere first.
Buying too many books. One student from Jhunjhunu came to us after spending over Rs. 6,000 buying nine different books in Delhi. Most of them covered the same topics differently. NCERTs and one good reference per subject is genuinely all you need.
Joining the wrong coaching first. This is the most expensive mistake in NDA preparation. Students join a general coaching center that also “does NDA” and spend six to eight months there. The level of NDA-specific training is not there. Then they have to join a proper NDA academy fresh. They have lost money, they have lost months, and sometimes they have lost an entire exam attempt. Start with the right place.
Paying for online subscriptions while also in classroom coaching. If your academy has good faculty and structured material, extra app subscriptions and YouTube courses just divide your attention. One good source, followed consistently, beats five scattered sources every time.
Planning SSB preparation only after clearing the written exam. SSB is not a switch you turn on in a week. It tests personality, leadership, communication, and psychological fitness. These are built over months. Starting late means either rushing badly or paying heavily for emergency coaching. It also means you walk into SSB underprepared when you could have walked in confident.
Some practical things to check before paying any coaching fees
Always ask for a complete all-inclusive fee, not just the tuition number. Some institutes show a lower base number and charge separately for study material kits (Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 8,000), test series access (Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000), SSB modules, hostel, and mess. The final number looks very different from what was advertised.
Ask specifically whether SSB preparation is included or charged separately. Ask whether hostel and meals are part of the fee or billed monthly. Ask whether weekly mock tests and performance reports are included.
A transparent institute will answer all of this clearly and immediately.
