So the NDA written exam result is out. Your roll number is in the list. First of all congratulations. That is a big moment. Not everyone makes it to this stage.

But here is the thing that trips many students up. They think the hard part is done. They assume SSB will somehow manage itself. They relax a little too much.

We have seen this happen with many aspirants over the years. The written result comes out, and instead of immediately getting ready for the next step, students spend days celebrating without understanding what comes next, when to apply, how to fill the SSB preference form, or what documents are required.

This guide is our attempt to make sure you don’t make that mistake.

We are going to walk you through the entire SSB application process after NDA written result step by step, in simple language so you know exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to be ready from Day 1 of SSB.

What Happens After the NDA Written Exam Result?

Before jumping into the steps, let us quickly understand what actually happens after UPSC declares the NDA written result.

UPSC conducts the NDA written exam twice a year NDA 1 usually in April and NDA 2 in September. After the exam, results are declared on the official UPSC website at upsc.gov.in, typically within 4 to 6 weeks of the exam.

When the result comes out, UPSC releases a PDF containing roll numbers of candidates who have qualified for the SSB interview stage. This list is sent to the respective Service Headquarters Army, Navy, and Air Force.

From this point onward, the SSB process is managed not by UPSC but by the three services separately. Each service contacts candidates and allots SSB dates and centres based on the preference form that candidates fill online.

This is something most students do not know. After the written result, the ball moves from UPSC’s court to the Indian Army, Indian Navy, or Indian Air Force.

Step 1 Check the NDA Written Exam Result on the UPSC Website

The very first step is confirming your result from the official source.

Go to upsc.gov.in ? What’s New ? Results ? NDA & NA Exam

UPSC releases a written result PDF that contains roll numbers of qualified candidates. Download this PDF and verify your roll number.

A few important things to note here:

UPSC does not send individual result letters or emails. You have to check yourself on the website.
The result PDF only mentions roll numbers. It does not mention marks at this stage.
Individual marks are released separately after the entire selection process is completed.

Once you confirm your roll number is in the list, immediately save a screenshot and note down your roll number. You will need it in every step that follows.

Also check the cut-off marks announcement. Even though marks are released later, UPSC mentions the qualifying standard in their notice. This helps you understand where you stand.

Step 2 Understand Your Wing and Which Service Will Contact You

When you filled the NDA application form, you selected your wing preference Army, Navy (which includes the Naval Academy), or Air Force.

After the written result, each service contacts its own set of candidates. So it is important to remember which wing you applied for.

Indian Air Force candidates fill their details at careerindianairforce.cdac.in

Each of these portals will be updated after UPSC releases the written result and sends the qualified candidates list to service headquarters.

At this stage, we always advise students to keep all login credentials ready the email ID and phone number registered at the time of NDA form filling because all SSB allotment communication happens on those details.

Step 3 Fill the SSB Date and Centre Preference Form

This is the most important step and the one most students are confused about.

After UPSC sends the qualified list to service headquarters, candidates receive an SMS and email notification asking them to log in to the respective service portal and fill their SSB date and centre preference.

This is not automatic. You have to actively log in and fill this form. If you miss the window, you may lose your chance for that cycle.

How to Fill the Preference Form

For Army wing candidates:

Go to joinindianarmy.nic.in
Log in using your registered email ID and password (created during NDA application)
Navigate to the SSB Interview section
Fill your SSB centre preferences in order of priority
Select your SSB date options
Submit and take a printout/screenshot of the confirmation

For Navy / Naval Academy candidates:

When filling the preference, choose the centre that is most convenient for travel, accommodation, and logistics. But remember the final allotment may not always match your first preference. The service headquarters allots centres based on availability and batch scheduling.

Step 4 Wait for the SSB Date Allotment Letter

After you submit your preference form, the service headquarters processes it and allots you an SSB date and reporting centre. This is communicated through:

Email to your registered email ID
SMS to your registered mobile number
The same service portal login (you can check there too)

The SSB allotment letter is an official document. It contains:

Your name and roll number
The SSB centre address
Reporting date and time
Instructions for what to carry

Once you receive this letter, download it and take multiple printouts. This is your entry document for the SSB centre.

Typically, SSB dates are allotted somewhere between 2 to 3 months after the NDA written result. So if the written result comes in June, SSB batches usually start from August or September onwards and continue for several months.

Step 5 Prepare the Documents to Carry for SSB

SSB Call Letter / Allotment Letter (printed copy, 2-3 copies)
NDA Admit Card (original + photocopy)
Class 10th Marksheet and Certificate (original + photocopy)
Class 12th Marksheet (if passed) OR School Bonafide Certificate (if appearing)

Step 6 Know the SSB Process What Happens in 5 Days

Many students who clear the written exam have never been to SSB before. They reach the centre not knowing what the next five days will look like.

Let us break it down clearly.

Day 1 Reporting and Stage 1 Screening

You report to the SSB centre, complete documentation check, and are assigned a chest number. This chest number replaces your name for the entire duration of SSB.

Stage 1 consists of two tests:

OIR Officer Intelligence Rating Test This is a series of two booklets with verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions. Questions must be solved quickly and accurately. Around 50 to 60 questions per booklet in about 17 minutes each.

PPDT Picture Perception and Discussion Test A hazy picture is shown for 30 seconds. You write a story about it (about 60 words, with a hero, plot, and conclusion). Then you discuss the stories in a group and arrive at a common narrative.

After Stage 1, results are announced the same evening. Candidates who qualify Stage 1 continue. Others are sent home that day. Statistically, about 30 to 40% of candidates clear Stage 1.

Day 2 Psychology Tests

This is a full day of written psychological tests:

TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) 11 pictures + 1 blank slide. Write a story for each in 4 minutes.
WAT (Word Association Test) 60 words shown one by one on a screen. Write the first positive sentence that comes to mind. About 15 seconds per word.
SRT (Situation Reaction Test) 60 situations. Write what you would do in each. About 30 minutes total.
SDT (Self Description Test) Write what your parents, teachers, friends think about you, and what you think about yourself.

These tests are not about right or wrong answers. They assess your natural personality, values, and thought process.

Day 3 and 4 GTO Tasks (Group Testing Officer)

GTO tasks are outdoor and group-based activities. These two days test leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and physical coordination.

GTO tasks include:

Group Discussion (GD) two rounds on current topics and abstract topics
Group Planning Exercise (GPE) a map-based problem-solving task done as a team
Progressive Group Task (PGT) cross obstacles as a group using limited materials
Half Group Task (HGT) same as PGT but with half the group
Individual Obstacles 10 individual obstacles in a circuit (no time limit, scored by completion)
Command Task you command a small group to solve an obstacle task
Lecturette 3 to 4 minutes talk in front of the group on a topic from 4 options
Final Group Task (FGT) last group obstacle task

GTO tasks are the most visible part of SSB. What you do here tells assessors a lot about who you actually are under pressure.

Personal Interview (PI)

The Personal Interview happens between Day 2 and Day 4. Each candidate has one-on-one interview with an Interviewing Officer (IO) for 30 to 60 minutes.

Questions cover:

Your personal background, family, hometown
School and academic performance
Hobbies, sports, activities
Why you want to join the armed forces
Current affairs and GK awareness
Situations and leadership scenarios

The PI is one of the most important components. A confident, honest, and grounded candidate makes a very strong impression here.

Day 5 Conference

The final day is the Conference Board. All assessors Psychologist, GTO, and IO together review each candidate. The candidate is called in briefly for a short interaction.

After the conference, results are announced. Candidates who are Recommended continue to the medical examination. Others are informed about not being recommended.

Being recommended at SSB means you are declared fit to proceed to the medical stage. It is a significant achievement and puts you very close to NDA.

Step 7 After SSB Recommendation Medical Examination

Recommended candidates go through a detailed medical examination conducted by the Armed Forces Medical authorities.

The medical exam checks:

Eyesight (unaided and aided vision, colour vision)
Height and weight (as per service norms)
Ear, nose, and throat
Heart and lungs
Orthopaedic fitness (no flat feet, spine issues, etc.)
Dental fitness
Blood and urine tests

If a candidate is medically fit, they proceed to the Merit List stage. If a medical issue is found, candidates can apply for an Appeal Medical Board within a specific time period.

Step 8 Final Merit List and Joining NDA

After SSB and medical clearance, UPSC and the respective service prepare the Final Merit List combining:

NDA Written Exam Marks
SSB Interview Marks (900 marks total)

The final merit list is published on the UPSC website. Candidates in the merit list receive joining letters and report to the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune for training.

The NDA training course is 3 years long and covers academic, military, and physical training together.

Common Mistakes Students Make After NDA Written Result Avoid These

Over the years, we have noticed certain patterns. Students who fall into these traps lose their SSB opportunity even after qualifying the written exam.

Mistake 1: Not checking the preference form window The SSB preference form has a limited open window. If you don’t log in and fill it within the deadline, you may miss your batch.

Mistake 2: Using an old or wrong email ID during NDA form filling All SSB communication goes to the registered email. Students who used a temporary or rarely-checked email often miss the SSB call letter.

Mistake 3: Relaxing after the written result SSB starts 2-3 months after the result. That gap is not a holiday. It is your preparation time. Students who use it well come to SSB with a strong edge.

Mistake 4: Not preparing for Stage 1 seriously Many students think Stage 1 is just a formality. But 60 to 70% of candidates are screened out on Day 1 itself. OIR and PPDT need specific practice.

When does the SSB process start after NDA written result?
