“Sir, should I target NDA 1 or NDA 2?”
And honestly, it is one of the most important decisions an NDA aspirant has to make early on. We have seen students make the wrong choice here and struggle because of it. Not because they were not capable. Simply because they did not plan around the right attempt.

First, Let Us Understand What NDA 1 and NDA 2 Actually Are
UPSC conducts the NDA exam twice every year. The first exam, held around April, is called NDA 1. The second exam, held around September, is called NDA 2.
Both exams have the exact same syllabus. The same two papers. The same marking scheme. The same selection process. There is no difference in quality, prestige, or career value between an NDA 1 selection and an NDA 2 selection.

Here is how the two attempts compare on dates for the year 2026.

NDA 1 is in April. NDA 2 is in September. That five month gap between the two exams is what creates very different preparation realities for students at different stages of their academic journey.
NDA 1 vs NDA 2: Vacancies
Both attempts announce vacancies separately for Army, Navy, Air Force, and Naval Academy wings.
For NDA 2 2026, UPSC officially announced 394 vacancies. Out of these, 370 seats are for male candidates and 24 seats are for female candidates.
NDA 1 also typically announces around 390 to 400 vacancies each year following a similar pattern.
This means if you appear for both exams in a year, the total opportunity across both attempts comes to roughly 780 to 800 seats combined. That is why we always tell students at Alpha NDA Academy to appear for both if eligible. Two attempts, double the chances.

The Age Eligibility Difference That Most Students Miss
Here is something many aspirants overlook completely. The age window for NDA 1 and NDA 2 in the same year is different because both have different course joining dates.
For NDA 1 2026: Candidates must be born between July 2, 2007 and July 1, 2010 (both dates inclusive).
For NDA 2 2026: Candidates must be born between January 2, 2008 and January 1, 2011 (both dates inclusive).
What this means in simple terms: some students are eligible for both NDA 1 and NDA 2 in the same year. Some students may only be eligible for one of the two. And some students may find that their age makes them eligible for NDA 1 of the current year but not NDA 2 of the same year.

NDA 1 vs NDA 2: Which Is Better for Class 12 Appearing Students?
This is the most important group. Let us talk straight.
Your Class 12 board exams happen in February and March every year. Practical exams start even earlier. The NDA 1 exam is in April, right after your boards. The board result season is also April to May.
What does this mean practically? In the months leading up to NDA 1, your mind is split between two major events. You are revising for boards. You are stressed about results. And on top of all this, you are trying to prepare for a national level UPSC exam.

NDA 2 is the smarter primary target for a current Class 12 student. Here is why.
By April, your boards are done. By May, your results are out. You know exactly where you stand. From May to September, you have roughly four months of clear, focused time. No school schedule. No board tension. No divided attention. Just NDA preparation.
That is a very powerful preparation window. Four months of focused preparation with the right coaching can build you into a serious candidate.
Now, should you skip NDA 1 entirely if you are in Class 12? Not necessarily. If you are well prepared, appear for NDA 1 too. The real exam experience is extremely valuable. But go in treating it as a learning experience, not as the exam where everything depends. Keep NDA 2 as your serious primary target.
NDA 1 vs NDA 2: Which Is Better for 12th Passed Students?
If you have cleared Class 12 and are preparing full time, the situation is completely different.
You have no board exams. No school conflicts. Nothing pulling your attention away. December to April gives you four months of clean preparation time after the NDA 1 notification comes out. If you started preparation earlier, which you should have, you are even more ready.
For a 12th passed student preparing full time, NDA 1 is your priority target.

Is One Attempt More Competitive Than the Other?
This question comes up all the time and we want to be very clear about it.
Both NDA 1 and NDA 2 attract lakhs of applicants. There is no version of this exam that is “easy.” NDA 2 sometimes sees slightly more applicants because it falls after the board exam season and more students have completed Class 12 by then. But the difference is not large enough to meaningfully change your chances.
The cutoff score varies from attempt to attempt based on how many students appeared, how the paper was set, and how many vacancies were announced. But neither attempt has a consistently lower cutoff than the other in any predictable pattern.
Our advice: do not pick an attempt thinking it will be less competitive. Pick based on your preparation level and your academic timeline. That is the only factor within your control.

Can You Appear for Both NDA 1 and NDA 2 in the Same Year?
Yes. UPSC allows this fully.
As long as you are age eligible for both attempts, you can apply and appear for both NDA 1 and NDA 2 in the same year. This is something we actively encourage all our students to do.
Here is why. Sitting in an actual UPSC exam hall for the first time teaches you things no amount of mock tests can fully replicate. The pressure, the timing, the environment, the question paper feel. All of this experience becomes an advantage when you sit for the second attempt.
Many students at Alpha NDA Academy have cleared NDA 2 because the experience of NDA 1 prepared them for exactly what to expect. That first attempt was not a failure. It was part of the strategy.

Board exams also directly impact your NDA eligibility. You need to pass Class 12 to join NDA. Failing boards even after clearing NDA written would disqualify you.
NDA 1 in April puts enormous pressure on a Class 12 student because you are trying to handle two massive things at once. Board preparation and NDA preparation are both demanding. Splitting your energy between them almost always hurts one of the two.
NDA 2 in September is after this storm has passed. You are in a clear mental space. You are focused. Your Class 12 result is already confirmed. That clarity reflects in your preparation quality and your exam performance.

What Happens After the Written Exam?
Planning your attempt is not just about the written exam. The process continues after results too.
After NDA 1, the written result typically comes out in May or June. SSB interview calls follow over the next several months. The course itself starts in January the following year.
After NDA 2, the written result typically comes out in November or December, with SSB interviews happening in the early months of the next year, and the course beginning in July of the following year.
