Most students who want to join the Army, Navy, or Air Force know what NDA is. What they do not know is what the selection actually looks like from the inside. Not the brochure version. The real one.
Around 5 lakh students appear for each NDA exam conducted by UPSC twice a year. Out of all of them, roughly 400 get selected. That is less than 0.1 percent per attempt.

Deepak came to us after Class 12. He was from Sikar itself, which is where our academy sits. You might think that made it easier for him. Familiar city, home food on weekends, no adjustment period. But Deepak had a specific problem that had nothing to do with any of that.
He was not bad at studies. He had passed Class 12 in decent numbers. What he had never done was sit for a timed, pressure-heavy exam that tested 150 questions in 2.5 hours while also covering Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Current Affairs simultaneously. His first NDA mock test here did not go well. Not badly wrong, but not the kind of score that makes a student feel the goal is reachable.

Himanshu Swami, Churu, Rajasthan: Coming From a Small Town With No Army Background at Home
Churu is a district in Rajasthan that most people outside the state have never heard of. It is not a city with multiple coaching centres and study groups and seniors who have been through NDA before. When Himanshu came to us from Churu, he was the first in his immediate family circle to aim for the armed forces through NDA.
That matters more than most people realise. When there is no one at home who has worn the uniform, who has been through SSB, who knows what a GTO task feels like, the reference points are completely missing. You are building something from zero.
What Himanshu needed most was not just academics. He needed to develop the kind of presence that SSB assesses. The Supreme Court of India allowed women to appear for NDA in September 2021. The first batch of women NDA cadets joined in 2022. That judgment was a historic one, and it opened a door that had been closed for decades.
Raman came to us from Hanumangarh with a very clear intention. She wanted to join the armed forces. She had wanted it before the Supreme Court order too, and the order did not create the ambition in her. It just gave ambition a legal door to walk through.

Dhruv, Gujarat, Class 11: The Out-of-State Student Who Left Home at 16
When students come to us from outside Rajasthan, from Gujarat, from Madhya Pradesh, from Haryana, from UP, there is a period in the first few weeks where everything feels unfamiliar. New state, new accent, new food, new people. You left home at 16 or 17 for a reason, but the reason does not make the adjustment frictionless.
Dhruv came from Gujarat in Class 11. His family had decided that if NDA was the goal, the preparation needed to start early. Jalore is in the south of Rajasthan. Not a name that shows up often in conversations about competitive exam preparation infrastructure. Exam temperament is a real thing. Most students who fail their first NDA attempt do not fail because they lack intelligence. They fail because they have never been tested at speed, under pressure, across nine different subjects in a single sitting. The written exam has two papers. Mathematics for 2.5 hours. SSB stands for Services Selection Board. It is a five-day process that happens after you clear the written exam. Day one is a screening round, a psychological test and an intelligence test, and roughly half the candidates are sent home on the same day. Those who stay go through four more days of Group Discussions, outdoor tasks, command tasks, psychological evaluations, and a personal interview.
What SSB is assessing is not your ability to answer questions correctly. It is assessing your personality. Specifically, 15 Officer Like Qualities that are defined by the Ministry of Defence and that the assessors are trained to look for. Things like effective intelligence, sense of responsibility, initiative, social adaptability, mental stamina, and communication ability.
You cannot fake these in five days. But you can build them over months.

Questions Students Ask After Reading Success Stories
Does it matter which state or city I am from for NDA preparation?
No. The NDA exam is national. It does not matter whether you are from a big city or a small district. What matters is the quality of your preparation. Students at Alpha NDA Academy come from across India including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and UP, and the selection rate holds across all of them.
What if I come from a non-army background at home and have no one to guide me?
This is one of the most common situations we see. Most of our students are the first in their family to attempt NDA. The coaching environment exists precisely to replace that background knowledge. How early should I start NDA preparation?

What is the total time from starting NDA preparation to getting commissioned as an officer?
If you start after Class 10 and are selected in your first eligible NDA attempt, the timeline looks like this: two years of foundation preparation, three years of training at NDA in Pune, one year of pre-commission training at IMA Dehradun (for Army), and you are commissioned as a Lieutenant at around 22 to 23 years of age. That is an officer’s commission before most engineering graduates have even started their first job.
