So today we are doing exactly that. We are going to walk you through every rank, every pay figure, and every benefit. All the data in this article comes from the 7th Central Pay Commission which is the currently active pay structure for Indian defence officers. No estimates, no guesses. Just the real numbers.

First, Understand How Army Salary Actually Works
A lot of students think Army salary is just one number on a payslip. It is not. It is actually a combination of several parts and when you add them all together, the total is quite different from what the basic pay looks like on paper.
Here is how it breaks down.
Basic Pay is the starting point. Every rank in the Army has a Pay Level, and that Pay Level defines your basic pay. What makes this interesting is that even without a promotion, your basic pay grows by 3 percent every single year. So if you join as a Lieutenant today at Rs 56,100, next year you are at Rs 57,783, and the year after that it grows again. This automatic annual increment keeps happening regardless of whether you get promoted or not. It is one of the most underappreciated parts of an Army career.
Military Service Pay or MSP is something very few people talk about but it is a big deal. Rs 15,500 every month, paid to every officer from Lieutenant all the way up to Brigadier, on top of basic pay. This is not available to IAS officers. Not to IPS. Not to any civilian government job. Only the armed forces get it. The government introduced this specifically because they recognise that military service comes with sacrifices that no desk job requires.
Dearness Allowance or DA gets revised every six months. Right now in 2026 it sits at around 60 percent. And here is the important thing. DA is calculated on basic pay plus MSP combined. So a Lieutenant’s DA is calculated at Rs 71,600 (56,100 plus 15,500), which adds roughly Rs 42,960 more per month. And as inflation rises, DA will keep going up automatically every six months.
HRA or House Rent Allowance depends on where you are posted. Metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai get 27 percent of basic pay as HRA. Smaller cities and towns get 9 or 18 percent. But here is the thing. If you get government accommodation at your posting, you do not need HRA because your rent is essentially zero. Either way, you win.
Now with this understanding, let us go through every rank from the bottom to the top.
Lieutenant: Day One of Your Career as an NDA Officer
An NDA cadet who completes three years at Khadakwasla and one year at IMA, INA, or AFA gets commissioned as a Lieutenant. Most NDA officers reach this rank at around 21 or 22 years of age.
Pay Level: 10
Basic Pay: Rs 56,100 per month
MSP: Rs 15,500 per month
DA at 60 percent on Basic and MSP combined: approximately Rs 43,000 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 1,25,000 per month depending on posting and applicable allowances
Think about what that means. At 21 or 22 years of age, fresh out of training, an NDA officer takes home over one lakh rupees a month. On top of that, accommodation is either free through government quarters or partially covered through HRA. Medical for the entire family is free. Canteen access gives heavily subsidised groceries and household items.
Your engineering college friend who just joined an IT company is earning maybe Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 in hand and paying Rs 12,000 to Rs 18,000 in rent. When you do the honest comparison, the NDA officer at 22 is financially miles ahead.
Time at this rank: Approximately 2 years before automatic promotion to Captain.
Captain: Same Work Gets Rewarded Faster
Promotion from Lieutenant to Captain is automatic. No competitive exam. No written test. After roughly 2 years of service you become a Captain. Simple as that.
Pay Level: 10B
Basic Pay: Rs 61,300 per month
MSP: Rs 15,500 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 1,10,000 to Rs 1,40,000 per month
A Captain typically commands a company of around 100 to 150 soldiers. Real responsibility comes with real pay. And remember, by the time you reach Captain, you have also had 2 years of 3 percent annual increments on top of the promotion jump. Your actual basic pay will already be higher than Rs 61,300 when you arrive at this level.
Major: Mid-Career and Serious Money
Around 6 years of service gets you to Major. At this point most NDA officers are in their late 20s and this is where the salary really starts looking impressive.
Pay Level: 11
Basic Pay: Rs 69,400 per month
MSP: Rs 15,500 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 1,25,000 to Rs 1,50,000 per month
A Major is often the second-in-command of a battalion or independently commands a company in a remote operational area. The work is serious, the stakes are real, and the pay reflects that. An NDA officer reaches this rank at around 28 to 30 years of age. That is younger than most engineering graduates who are still chasing their first promotion in the private sector.
Lieutenant Colonel: The Commanding Officer
Thirteen years of commissioned service and you are looking at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. This is the rank that commands a full battalion of around 800 to 1,000 soldiers.
Pay Level: 12A
Basic Pay: Rs 1,21,200 per month
MSP: Rs 15,500 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 1,70,000 to Rs 2,00,000 per month
Notice the jump here. From Major at Rs 69,400 to Lieutenant Colonel at Rs 1,21,200 is almost double the basic pay. This is one of the biggest pay jumps in the entire Army rank structure. An NDA officer hits this rank at around 35 to 36 years of age, still young enough to have many career years ahead.
Colonel: Selection Grade, Real Recognition
Fifteen years of service and this rank is possible, but the Colonel promotion is no longer automatic. It is by selection. Your performance record, your Annual Confidential Reports, and how your seniors have rated your leadership over the years all matter here.
Pay Level: 13
Basic Pay: Rs 1,30,600 per month
MSP: Rs 15,500 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 1,60,000 to Rs 2,00,000 per month
A Colonel commands a regiment or brigade, or holds senior staff positions at Army Headquarters or Formation Headquarters. The visibility at this rank is high and so is the responsibility.
Brigadier: Last Rank With MSP
Around 25 years of service. A Brigadier commands a Brigade of 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers. And importantly, this is the last rank that receives Military Service Pay. So while the pay is higher, the MSP stops at the next promotion.
Pay Level: 13A
Basic Pay: Rs 1,39,600 per month
MSP: Rs 15,500 per month (last rank with MSP)
In-Hand Salary: Rs 1,80,000 to Rs 2,20,000 per month
Most NDA officers who are good performers and stay in service reach Brigadier in their mid to late 40s. At that point in life, the combination of salary, accommodation, medical, pension accrual, and other benefits makes this one of the most comfortable career positions in the country.
Major General: Division Commander
Around 32 years of commissioned service. A Major General commands a Division of approximately 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers. MSP no longer applies from this rank but the basic pay more than compensates.
Pay Level: 14
Basic Pay: Rs 1,44,200 to Rs 2,18,200 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 2,00,000 to Rs 2,40,000 per month
There are not many Major Generals in the Indian Army at any given time. Reaching this rank means you are among the most senior and recognised officers in the country.
Lieutenant General: Corps Commander
Around 36 years of commissioned service. At this point an officer commands a Corps or holds the most senior appointments at Army Headquarters. The pay structure moves to what is called the Higher Administrative Grade scale.
Pay Level: 15 (HAG Scale)
Basic Pay: Rs 1,82,200 per month
In-Hand Salary: Rs 2,50,000 to Rs 2,75,000 per month
Lieutenant Generals are among the most powerful and respected individuals in the country’s defence apparatus.
VCOAS and Army Commanders (Pay Level 17)
Basic Pay: Rs 2,25,000 (fixed)
Total Monthly Package: Rs 3,00,000 or above
These are the most senior Lieutenant General positions. The Vice Chief of Army Staff and Army Commanders report directly to the Chief of Army Staff.
General: Chief of Army Staff
One person. The highest post in the Indian Army. The Chief of Army Staff commands the entire Indian Army and is directly responsible to the Defence Ministry and the Government of India.
Pay Level: 18 (Apex Scale)
Basic Pay: Rs 2,50,000 (fixed)
Total Monthly Package: Rs 3,00,000 or above
The NDA student who starts at Rs 56,100 as a Lieutenant is on the same ladder as this position. Every General was once a Lieutenant. Every COAS was once a young cadet who cleared the NDA exam, gave SSB, and reported to Khadakwasla with a suitcase and a dream.

All in-hand figures are approximate. DA is revised every 6 months so these numbers will keep moving upward. Posting location and applicable special allowances also affect the final figure.
What About Stipend During NDA Training?
This confuses a lot of students so let us clear it up properly.
During the three years at NDA Khadakwasla, cadets do not receive a regular salary. The government covers everything, your food, accommodation, training, and uniform, but pocket money comes from a deposit you submit when you join and a small amount is released for personal use.
The moment you move to your service academy for the fourth year, whether IMA, INA, or AFA, your stipend of Rs 56,100 per month starts. Same as a commissioned Lieutenant’s basic pay. So before you are even commissioned, you are already earning.

MSP: Rs 15,500 Every Month That Nobody Else Gets
We keep coming back to MSP because it is one of the most underappreciated benefits in the Army salary package.
Rs 15,500 per month. Fixed. Every month from Lieutenant to Brigadier.
That is Rs 1,86,000 per year just from MSP alone. And since DA is also calculated on it, the real benefit is even higher.
Over a career of say 25 years from Lieutenant to Brigadier, MSP contributes more than Rs 46 lakh. And that does not count the DA multiplier on top.
No IAS officer gets MSP. No IPS officer gets it. No state government employee gets it. It is exclusively for the armed forces because the government recognises that military service asks more of a person than any civilian job does.
Special Postings: When Salary Goes Even Higher
One thing most people outside the Army do not know is that certain postings come with additional money on top of regular salary.
If you are posted in a field area, meaning an active border or operational zone, you get a Field Area Allowance of Rs 10,500 to Rs 25,000 per month on top of everything else.
High altitude postings in places like Ladakh or parts of the Northeast add Rs 1,600 to Rs 16,900 per month depending on the altitude.
Siachen is the highest battlefield in the world and officers posted there receive a Siachen Allowance of over Rs 31,500 per month in addition to all regular pay. So a young Lieutenant at Siachen could potentially take home close to Rs 1,75,000 to Rs 2,00,000 per month.
Counter Insurgency Allowance is paid for postings in areas with active operations.
These are not hypothetical numbers. Officers serving in these areas receive these allowances every single month.
What Money Cannot Show You
We always tell parents this when we sit with them.
The monthly figures are real and they are genuinely impressive. But they do not capture everything.
Free accommodation saves Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000 per month in rent depending on which city. Free medical care for your entire family, spouse, children, and dependent parents, through Military hospitals means you will never need to worry about a hospital bill for the rest of your life. CSD canteen prices are heavily subsidised so your monthly grocery bill is significantly lower than what a civilian family pays. Kendriya Vidyalayas and Army schools provide excellent education for your children at minimal cost.
And then there is pension. After completing the required service years, officers receive a lifelong pension that is a percentage of their last drawn pay. That pension also receives DA revisions twice a year, just like active pay. So even after retirement, the income keeps growing with inflation.
When you add all of this up, the effective value of what an Army officer receives every month is significantly higher than just the in-hand salary number.
The 8th Pay Commission Is Coming
Here is something important for students preparing for NDA right now.
The 7th Pay Commission has been running since 2016. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to revise all defence salaries, and current projections suggest a fitment factor of around 1.92 times. This means every salary figure in this article is expected to increase significantly once the 8th Pay Commission comes into effect, which is expected around 2027.
Students who are preparing for NDA today and will be commissioned around 2028 or 2029 will likely start their careers on the revised, higher 8th Pay Commission salary. You are preparing for a career that is going to pay even better than the already excellent numbers we have listed above.
Is NDA Salary Actually Competitive in 2026?
A student asked us this last month at our Sikar campus. He said his relative keeps telling him that the private sector pays more.
So let us be honest about it.
At 21 years of age, an NDA officer takes home Rs 1,00,000 or more per month with zero rent, zero medical expenses, and zero school fees for his future children. A software engineer at 21 earns maybe Rs 35,000 to Rs 50,000 per month and pays Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 in rent just for a shared flat. The effective comparison is not even close.
By 30, an Army Major earns Rs 1,25,000 to Rs 1,50,000 in hand with all benefits included. An equivalent private sector professional might earn more in gross salary but after rent, EMIs, insurance premiums, school fees, medical expenses, and income tax deductions, the net financial position is often not better.
And after 35 years, the Army officer retires with a pension. The private sector professional has whatever savings they managed to build, which depends entirely on their own discipline and market conditions.
We are not saying private sector careers are bad. Many of our students have siblings who have built excellent careers in engineering and technology. But the common assumption that the Army pays less is simply not accurate when you look at the complete picture.
