NDA With a Tattoo — Is It Allowed? Everything Students Need to Know Before Getting Inked
Every few days, we get a message from a student who just got a tattoo on his arm.
The message usually goes something like this. “Sir, maine ek tattoo karwa liya hai. Ab mera NDA ka sapna khatam ho gaya kya?” And honestly, we understand why students panic. Nobody tells them the rules clearly before they sit in that tattoo parlour. By the time they come to us, the ink is already done and they are worried.
So we are writing this down properly. Once and for all.
Tattoos are allowed in NDA. But the location on your body, the content of the tattoo, and how you disclose it during your selection process — all of these things matter a great deal. Read this carefully before you do anything impulsive.
The Official NDA Tattoo Policy — What UPSC Actually Says
The tattoo rules for NDA and all defence services come from a formal policy called the “Tattoo Policy For Candidates Appearing For SSB Interview With Permanent Body Tattoo.” This policy came into effect on May 11, 2015, and has been followed consistently since.
Let us tell you what it says in plain terms.
Permanent tattoos are allowed ONLY on two specific areas of the body. First, the inner face of the forearm, meaning the area from the inside of the elbow all the way down to the wrist. Second, the back of both palms, also called the dorsal or reverse side of the hand.
That is it. Just those two areas.
Every other part of the body is out of bounds. Face, neck, chest, back, upper arms, outer forearm, legs — tattooed candidates will be rejected at the medical stage if the tattoo is anywhere other than the two permitted areas.
The same rules apply equally to male and female candidates.
So Where Exactly Is a Tattoo Allowed in NDA?
We want to be very clear about this because there is a lot of confusion online.
Allowed: The inner face of both forearms. This means the underside of your arm from your elbow to your wrist. If you stretch out your arm with your palm facing upward, the area you can now see from elbow to wrist — that is the allowed zone.
The back of both palms. This means the top side of your hand, not your palm.
Not Allowed: Outer forearm, meaning the top side of the arm from elbow to wrist. Students confuse this a lot. Inner forearm is allowed. Outer is not.
Face, neck, ears — any tattoo here will directly disqualify you.
Upper arms, chest, back, stomach, legs — none of these are permitted areas.
Fingers, wrists on the outer side — also not within the permitted area.
If your tattoo is even slightly outside the inner forearm zone or the back of the palm, the medical board can reject you. And they will. We have seen it happen with students who had tattoos just a centimetre or two outside the allowed area. This is not a rule to take chances with.
Frequently Asked Questions on NDA Tattoo Rules
These are the real questions students ask us at Alpha NDA Academy. We are answering them exactly as we would if you were sitting across from us.
Q1. I have a tattoo on my inner forearm. Am I eligible for NDA?
Yes, a tattoo on the inner forearm is within the permitted zone. You should be fine at the medical stage as long as the design itself is acceptable (more on that below) and the tattoo does not extend outside the inner forearm zone into the outer arm or wrist area.
That said, during the SSB interview, you will be asked to declare any tattoos you have. Be honest. Do not hide it. The consequences of hiding a tattoo and being caught later are far worse than declaring it upfront.

Q2. I have a tattoo on my outer forearm. Will I be rejected?
This is where students get confused most often. The inner forearm is allowed. The outer forearm is not. These are two very different parts of the arm.
If your tattoo is on the outer forearm — the side that faces up when your hands hang naturally at your sides — it is in a restricted area. The policy does not permit it.
At the NDA medical, the board will check this carefully. If your tattoo is on the outer forearm and is visible, it can lead to rejection. We would strongly advise getting a formal opinion from a tattoo removal specialist well before your medical examination if you are in this situation.
Q3. I have a tattoo on my wrist. Is that okay?
Wrist area is a grey zone depending on exactly where the tattoo sits. The allowed area ends at the wrist on the inner forearm side. If the tattoo is on the inner wrist, it may be within the permitted zone. If it wraps around onto the outer wrist, it is likely not.
Our honest advice is this. Do not try to interpret the boundary yourself. Get your specific situation evaluated by someone who knows defence medical standards. Come to us, show us where it is, and we will give you a clear answer based on what we know from experience.
Q4. I got a tattoo on my chest or upper arm. Am I disqualified?
A tattoo on the chest, upper arm, back, neck, or any part of the body other than the inner forearm and back of the palm falls under the restricted category. During the medical examination at the military hospital, every part of the body is checked. A tattoo in a non-permitted area will be flagged.
This is one of those situations where we tell students not to panic but to act early. If you still have time before your medical, tattoo removal is an option. But the tattoo must be completely removed without any visible marks or scarring left behind. We explain this in more detail with a few questions below.
Q5. What kind of tattoo designs are NOT allowed even if they are in the right place?
Location is one part. Content is the other part. Even if your tattoo is exactly on the inner forearm in the allowed area, certain designs will still get you rejected.
Tattoos that contain offensive, obscene, or vulgar content are not permitted.
Tattoos with extremist symbols, political content, or imagery associated with any radical ideology are strictly banned. The Armed Forces require complete neutrality from their officers.
Tattoos that in any way undermine national unity, religious sentiments, or military values will lead to rejection. No exceptions.
Essentially, the content must be simple and decent. Examples of tattoos that are generally acceptable include a small religious symbol, the name of a close family member, or a simple motivational word or image. The tattoo should not be large, not offensive, and not carry any controversial meaning.
Q6. So what kind of tattoo content is acceptable?
Small religious symbols are generally fine. A small Om symbol, a cross, a crescent — these are considered acceptable as long as they are modest and not combined with any political message.
Name of a close family member is also considered acceptable. Many students and even serving officers have their mother’s name or a family member’s name tattooed on their inner forearm. This has been acceptable.
Simple, small, non-offensive designs that do not carry any ideological or extremist association are generally fine.
Keep it simple. Keep it clean. That is the bottom line.
Q7. I belong to a tribal community and I have a tattoo on my face or arm according to our tradition. Am I disqualified?
No. Tribal candidates receive a specific exemption under NDA tattoo rules.
If you belong to a recognized tribal community and your tattoo is part of the traditional customs and practices of your tribe, you can have tattoos on any part of the body. The policy makes this exception very clear.
But you cannot simply claim to be tribal without proof. You will need to submit three specific documents during the SSB process.
First, a self-certification certificate signed by you.
Second, a certificate of belonging to a tribal community. This must come from a recognized authority — either the District Magistrate, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, or a recognized tribal authority from your area.
Third, the remarks of the Commandant of the Selection Centre on your permanent body tattoos.
If you have all three of these and they are in order, the tribal exemption applies to you and tattoos in non-standard locations will not be a reason for rejection. But if you do not have these documents, do not assume the exemption will be granted. Go prepared.
Q8. Do I need to tell the SSB about my tattoo or can I keep it hidden?
You must disclose it. This is not optional.
At the SSB interview, during the initial documentation and check-in stage, you are expected to inform the authorities about any permanent body tattoos you have. Do not try to hide it. Do not cover it with a bandage or clothing hoping nobody notices.
The consequences of concealing a tattoo and being caught — whether at SSB Stage 1, Stage 2, or at the final military hospital medical — are serious. You can be disqualified from that attempt and it can also affect future attempts. The integrity and honesty standards expected of an NDA aspirant are extremely high.
Declare it. Let the medical authorities assess it. If it is within the permitted area and has acceptable content, it will not be a problem.
Q9. Can I get my tattoo removed before the NDA medical and then appear?
Yes, tattoo removal is an option. But it comes with a very specific condition.
The tattoo must be completely removed. No visible marks, no discolouration, and no scarring should remain on the skin after the removal. If any residual mark or scar is visible, the medical board will still take note of it and it can still affect your selection.
Laser tattoo removal is the most effective method currently available. However, complete removal typically requires multiple sessions spread over several months, and the time needed depends on the size, colour, and depth of the tattoo.
If you are planning to get a tattoo removed before an upcoming NDA medical, start the process as early as possible. Do not leave it for the last few weeks before your medical date. It will not be enough time.
Q10. Can girls with tattoos join NDA?
Yes. The same tattoo policy applies to female candidates as it does to male candidates. The permitted areas are the same — inner forearm and back of the palm. The content rules are the same. The tribal exemption conditions are the same.

Q11. I am in Class 10 or 11 and planning to get a tattoo. Should I?
Please do not.
We say this to every student who comes to us with this question. If you are serious about NDA and a defence career, wait. There is nothing wrong with getting a tattoo as a personal expression, but do it after you have completed your NDA selection and training. At that point, you know your situation completely and you can make an informed decision within the allowed guidelines.
Getting a tattoo at 16 or 17 in a location that might affect your selection later is a risk that is simply not worth taking. We have seen students regret this. It is an avoidable situation.

Q12. Is the tattoo rule the same for Army, Navy, and Air Force in NDA?
Yes. The “Tattoo Policy For Candidates Appearing For SSB Interview” applies uniformly across all three services — Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. The permitted locations (inner forearm and back of palm), the content rules, and the tribal exemption all apply identically to all three wings.
There is no branch of the Armed Forces that has a more relaxed tattoo rule than others when it comes to NDA entry.
What Happens at the SSB and Medical if You Have a Tattoo
Let us walk you through the actual process so you know what to expect.
At the time of reporting to the SSB centre, you will go through documentation verification and an initial check. You are expected to proactively inform the reporting officer if you have a permanent tattoo. They will note its location and content and record it in your file.
During Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the SSB, your tattoo does not play a direct role in the psychological or interview evaluation. The assessors are evaluating your personality, officer-like qualities, and aptitude. A tattoo in the allowed area and with acceptable content will not count against you.
The final medical examination happens at an authorised military hospital after you clear the SSB. This is where the tattoo is officially evaluated by the medical board. They will physically check the location, assess the content, and make a ruling on whether it meets the standards.

Here is what we tell every student when this topic comes up.
If you already have a tattoo in the allowed area with acceptable content, relax. Declare it properly, and move on with your preparation. It is not a problem.
If you have a tattoo in a non-allowed area, do not wait and hope for the best. Find out your options now — whether that is removal, or understanding whether your specific situation has any avenue under the tribal exemption. Knowing early gives you time to act.
And if you are thinking about getting a tattoo right now as a 16 or 17 year old with NDA dreams — please wait. Your defence career will be long and fulfilling. You can make that choice after selection. Do not give anyone a reason to question your eligibility before you even step into the exam hall.
